HYDROGEN
Hydrogen has the potential to revolutionize transportation and, possibly, our entire energy system. The simplest and most abundant element in the universe, hydrogen can be produced from fossil fuels and biomass and even by electrolyzing water. Producing hydrogen with renewable energy and using it in fuel cell vehicles holds the promise of virtually pollution-free transportation and independence from imported petroleum.
Facts
- It is renewable, and it is the most abundant element on the earth. Hydrogen comprises more than 75 percent of the environment
- hydrogen is a colorless and odorless gas
- Hydrogen fuel cells, in and of themselves, are probably the most effective blend of producing zero emissions, while also delivering more motive power than the electric, battery-powered car.
- Inside the fuel cell, hydrogen reacts with oxygen to produce electricity and power the motor. The waste product is just regular water.
- Cars with internal combustion engines use only 20 percent of the energy available in gasoline. Cars with hydrogen fuel cells use about 40 to 60 percent of hydrogen's potential energy.
- They are much quieter and produce fewer vibrations than vehicles powered by internal combustion engines.
- Hydrogen fuel cells can be designed in a variety of shapes. This means that the traditional shape of cars can be adapted and advanced
